Seeing Life Through a Different Lens
And the Life Lessons I Learned on this Journey
Changing my Perspective
They say a picture is worth 1000 words. This quote has always fascinated me. Could I create images that portray more than a research paper? Maybe that is why I have been drawn toward photography. Being able to tell stories without talking is an incredible talent.
I have been lucky enough to have traveled to some amazing places. I am learning great skills and learning that the best photography comes from within. I love how we all see something different. I have been learning to use a camera as a tool to see beyond the lens.
Focusing on light
Light is powerful. Capturing the right light can show layers, drama, and emotions. I use light to focus on what is most important; to enhance colors and textures. Light has the power to control mood, and can even help show a little magic and wonder.
As a photographer and UX designer, I’m learning to look at the world differently. Through photography, I can see deeper and understand that behind every picture is a story. Telling that story is a real gift. I love the possibilities and potential. Visual communication is my language.
Storytelling
Creating my first documentary
For a class project, we had to document something that was happening in our world, tell a story with photographs. I chose coronavirus before it really became a thing. I hit the beginning of our world-changing. It was amazing to watch it happen through a lens. I tried to show the mood and feeling that was happening before our eyes. My 1-minute documentary
Changing the Mood
Even when circumstances don’t change, the way we see things can. The music stayed the same, the world hadn’t changed. I decided I needed some color and light. I decided to add a Coronavirus part 2. The only thing that changed is the way I looked at it. I saw the same world through a different lens.
My own Composition Rules
My favorite is called “Look Up.” It is playing with leading lines to get great compositions. I love the unique views and perfect balance when looking up.
Looking Up
Leading Lines to a Focal Point
Using the Rule of Thirds
Finding Layers
Finding Color
No wonder Disney used this town as the background for Beauty and the Beast.
Finding Mood
Learning Patience
3 am was the only time without crowds at Trevi Fountain and waiting for the sunset to get the Tower Bridge shot I really wanted.
Learning from the Masters
We would study and copy the techniques of famous photographers; a great way to learn about any subject.
Celebrating Childhood
I am trying to capture the innocence and wonder with lighting and bribes.
Capturing the size of a newborn versus the hands of a father.
In awe when I can capture the perfect moments in this world.
Simplicity
Using all my UI design skills of composition, color, and balance has led to better shots that are simple and focus on the amazing.
Using background color to make my subject stand out.
Opening my eyes
Awareness of what is right outside my own backyard.
Sharing the Crazy Creations
Seeing Art Through the Lens
Taking my photography one step further has been fun. I like things that are not like everyone else's. I know I see things differently and it is fun to show that once in a while. Here are my photographs I turned into art.
How I see the beach. Just showing you a glimpse through my lens.
Changing my Focus
Sometimes we just need a new angle to really see things. I am learning to look around and see things others miss. I am learning to tell stories without words. I am learning to appreciate my different lenses.
